1. Disk space
By freeing disk space, you can improve the performance of your computer. Disk Cleanup tool helps you free up space on your hard disk. The tool determines the files that you can safely delete, and then lets you choose whether you want to remove all or part of the files that have been identified.
Use Disk Cleanup:
• Remove temporary Internet files.
• Remove files that are downloaded (such as Microsoft ActiveX controls and applications of Java).
• empty the trash.
• Delete temporary files of the operating system Windows.
• Remove optional Windows components that do not use.
• Remove installed programs that are no longer used.
Tip: Typically, temporary Internet files take the most amount of space because the browser caches each page you visit for faster access later.
To use the Disk Cleanup
A. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Cleanup. If several drives are available, you may be prompted to select the drive you want to clean up.
B. In the Disk Cleanup for dialog box, scroll through the contents of files to delete the list.
Choose the files you want to delete.
C. Clear the check boxes for files that do not want to delete and click OK.
D. When prompted to confirm that you want to delete the selected files, click Yes.
After a few minutes, and ends the process and disk Cleanup dialog box closes, leaving your computer clean and more efficient.
2. Speed up data access
Disk fragmentation slows the overall performance of your system. When files are fragmented, the computer must search the hard disk when you open the file back together. Can not be a response time much longer.
Disk Defragmenter is a Windows tool that enhance the fragmented files and folders on the hard drive of your computer so that each occupies a single space on the disk. With files stored completely from beginning to end, without fragmentation, reading and writing to the disk speeds up.
When to run Disk Defragmenter
In addition to operating retail at regular intervals in a month is optimal and there are other times, you should run it too, such as the following cases:
• You can add a lot of files.
• free disk space is 15 percent or less.
• install new software or a new version of Windows.
To use the Disk Defragmenter:
A. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Defragmenter.
Click Scan to start the Disk Defragmenter.
B. In the Disk Defragmenter dialog box, click the drives you want to defragment and click Analyze. After analyzing the disk, a dialog box appears, allowing you whether you should defragment the analyzed drives.
Tip: You should analyze the volume before defragmenting to get an estimate how long it will take the process of fragmentation.
C. To defragment the selected drive or drives, click Defragment. Note: In Windows Vista, there is no graphical user interface to show progress, but it is to defragment your hard drive is still going on.
Once the defragmentation is complete, Disk Defragmenter displays the results.
D. To view detailed information about the defragmented disk or partition, click View Report.
E. To close the dialog box to view the report, click Close.
P. To close the Disk Defragmenter utility, click the Close button on the title bar of the window.
3. Detect and repair disk errors
In addition to running Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter to optimize the performance of your computer, you can verify the integrity of files stored on your hard disk by running the Error Checking utility.
When you use a hard disk, it can develop bad sectors. Bad sectors slow down hard disk performance and make the writing of data in some cases (such as providing file) is difficult or impossible. Error Checking utility scans the hard drive for bad sectors, and scans for file system errors to see if you are misplaced certain files or folders.
If you use your computer daily, you must run this tool once a week to help prevent data loss.
To run the verification of the error:
A. Close all open files.
B. Click Start, click My Computer.
C. In the My Computer window, right-click on the drive you want to search for bad sectors and click Properties.
D. In the Properties dialog box, click the Tools tab.
E. Click on Check Now button.
P. In the disk check dialog box, select Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box, then click Start.
C. If you find bad sectors, and choose to correct them.
Tip: Do not select "Automatically fix file system errors" box if you think that your disk contains bad sectors.
4. Protect your computer from spyware
Spyware collects personal information without notifying you and without permission. Of Web sites you visit to usernames and passwords, spyware can put you and your confidential information at risk. In addition to concerns about privacy, spyware can hamper your computer's performance. Anti-spyware, you may want to consider using Microsoft Windows Defender, which is included in Windows Vista, and is available as a free download for Microsoft XP SP2. Otherwise, there are other free programs anti-spyware programs available.
5. Use ReadyBoost
If you are running Windows Vista, you can use ReadyBoost to speed up your system. A new concept in adding memory to a system, it allows you to use non-volatile flash memory, such as USB flash drive or memory card to improve performance without adding additional memory.

Windows ReadyBoost improves memory and enhances system performance.
Add memory system (usually referred to as RAM) is often the best way to improve the performance of a computer, since more memory means more applications are ready to run without accessing the hard drive. However, upgrading memory can be difficult and expensive, and some machines have limited capacity to expand the memory, making it impossible to add RAM.
Windows Vista introduces Windows ReadyBoost, and, a new concept in adding memory to the system. You can use nonvolatile flash memory, such as those in the Universal Serial Bus (USB) flash drive, to improve performance without adding memory "under the hood."
Flash memory device as additional memory cache, which means that the computer's memory can be accessed much faster than it can access data on your hard disk. Windows ReadyBoost relies on the intelligent memory management of Windows and Super can dramatically improve system response.
It is easy to use Windows ReadyBoost. When the first device is inserted into the removable storage such as USB flash drive or memory card Secure Digital (SD) in the port, Windows Vista checks to see if its performance is fast enough to work with Windows ReadyBoost. If this happens, you will be asked if you want to use this device to speed up system performance. You can choose to allocate part of the memory USB drive to speed up performance and use the remainder to store files.
